Balance Over Burnout

As academic workload increases during the semester, it is important to maintain a healthy balance of studies and personal life to foster positive psychological well-being, reduce stress, and avoid burnout.

Burnout is a multidimensional syndrome stemming from physical, emotional, and/or mental exhaustion. It is commonly accompanied by decreased motivation, lowered performance, negative attitudes, and decreased physical and psychological health, including increased stress. For students, burnout is also a negative predictor of academic achievement.

Few studies have specifically addressed interventions of academic burnout, however, existing research reveals a clear link between academic burnout and several factors. These factors include academic pressure, peer and family support, and internal factors such as personality, self-esteem, and motivation. Each of these have been found to significantly influence the occurrence of burnout in students.

Achieving a healthy balance of academic workload and personal life can help offset, or even potentially avoid, burnout.
